7/16/2010 | Special Representative Ellen Margrethe Løj in July visited Grand Gedeh County bordering Côte d'Ivoire during which she inspected the 30-km Garley Town and Zaway Border road being rehabilitated by Chinese UN peacekeeping engineers. The UN envoy also visited the Palace of Corrections in Zwedru, the county’s capital, and an agricultural project. She commended the work of UN peacekeepers in the area including the Chinese and Indians. 7/13/2010 | The Nigerian Battalion (NIBATT-22) in July 2010 completed a five-month apprenticeship training in welding and tailoring for 11 Liberians.  The United Nations Development Programme provided each tailoring graduate a start-up kit including a sewing machine and accessories while each welding graduate received a welding machine and accessories. The training is part of capacity building efforts by UN peacekeepers. 6/11/2010 | Special Representative Ellen Margrethe Løj, along with colleagues, paid tribute to a fallen UNMIL Indian Police Officer, Constable Dinesh Kumar Pandey. This gallant son of India lost his life by succumbing to the injuries he incurred following a road traffic accident on 30 May in Monrovia. The late Constable Pandey was a member of the technical support team (mechanic) of the all-female Indian Formed Police Unit (FPU). 6/10/2010 | UN envoy Ellen Margrethe Løj has urged the Liberian women peace leaders to involve young women and men in the process to promote sustainable peace and security in Liberia and to enhance the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325.  Addressing the Global Open Day event at the University of Liberia, she called for the encouragement of young women and men, who are the ones to carry the torch forward, and stressed that women’s peace and security is a precondition for sustainable development. 6/8/2010 | Margot Wallström, SRSG on Sexual Violence in Conflict visited a peace hut in Totota, Bong County.  The peace hut provides women with a protected space for discussions on issues and decision-making processes that affect their lives, out of the influence of men.  The issues discussed and resolved include leadership, gender based violence, peace building and community policing. 5/28/2010 | Liberia's Vice President, Ambassador Joseph Boakai, and Special Representative  Ellen Margrethe Løj pay tribute to UN peacekeepers, including those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of peace in Liberia, Afghanistan, Haiti and other parts of the world at the commemoration of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers at UNMIL headquarters in Monrovia. At a memorial service for fallen colleagues, Ms Løj urged UN staff to continue the legacy of the departed peacekeepers and 5/7/2010 | The Liberian National Police on Friday 7 May graduated 47 officers, including one woman, of “Class Five” - the last graduates under the current Emergency Response Unit Development Programme. The new graduates will  bring the total strength of the ERU to 344 officers, including four females. UNMIL Deputy Special Representative for Rule of Law, Ms. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, in her remarks at the event, highlighted the operational dilemma faced by the LNP and  said, “While they are steadfastly improving in the quality of police service delivered; they are increasingly challenged by the imbalance between operational demands and available budgetary allocations.” She encouraged the Government of Liberia to “do its utmost to provide the LNP, and the security sector, with the means to be operationally effective.” 4/29/2010 | More  than 500 Liberians including nursing mothers, the elderly and students from three schools in the Johnsonville Township near Monrovia,  benefitted from free medical outreach organized by the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) Jordanian medical team. The event took place on 26 April. The team’s commander, Col. Abdallah Ihmoud, said his contingent’s visit to Johnsonville is a humanitarian gesture from the Jordanian to the Liberian people. The outreach also included training in maintaining good hygiene.   The Jordanian team also distributed an assortment of school items to students such as bags, books, pens and pencils. Community members expressed gratitude to the Jordanians for their support. 4/22/2010 | Residents of Careysburg near Monrovia have commended the UN Mission in Liberia for conducting skills training in auto mechanics, masonry, construction, tailoring, computer literacy and machinery aimed at building the capacity of Liberians. The training brought together 26 Liberians who comprised teachers, students, Armed Forces of Liberia personnel, and other residents. Brigadier General Ebiobowei Bonna Awala urged the young Liberians to make good use of their skills and train other people. “ We have been tasked by UNMIL Force Headquarters to ensure that we have an impact on our local Liberian communities through skills to help them develop their country, and this is exactly what Pakistani Engineers-12 Contingent has done,” he said. 4/20/2010 | The Government of Liberia, National Elections Commission (NEC) and Development Partners through the United Nations have formalized an agreement in support of the Liberian Electoral Cycle, 2010-2012. Planning & Economic Affairs Minister, NEC Chairman, and the Deputy Special Representative  for Recovery and Governance, Moustapha Soumare, signed the Project Document spelling out the roadmap for the upcoming elections. DSRSG Soumare said the total estimated cost of the project is US$39.3 million out of which the Government of Liberia has committed US$12.1 million. The Government of Spain has already contributed US$750,000 and pledges so far by Development Partners amount to US$15.6 million. “I have every confidence that the balance in the budget will be successfully mobilized this year,” he said. 4/19/2010 | As the UN Mission continues a gradual drawdown process, locals of Suakoko District, Bong County, honoured Bangladeshi engineering peacekeepers for their contributions to the people of the area at the end of their tour of duty in April.  The Muslim-dominated peacekeepers were honoured  for  clearing  the  construction site of  the  church-sponsored orphanage  “Christ’s Children Home”, in addition to constructing  a football pitch, laying out  of  a major  street  in the  town, among others. Adorned in a beautiful African attire, the commander of the Engineering Unit, Lt.- Col.  Muhammad Abdul Hamid Shardar applauded the locals for their hospitality during their  stay  in the county. 4/16/2010 | A High-Level Summit on Aid Effectiveness opened in the Liberian capital Monrovia on 15 April with the theme: “Maximizing High Quality Aid for Growth and Development”.  The two-day Summit, organized by the Government of Liberia and partners, brought  together donors, non-governmental organizations and civil society. The UN Deputy Special Representative for Recovery and Governance, Moustapha Soumaré, commended the Government for seeking ownership over the coordination of aid delivery in Liberia and described the Summit as “further evidence of the Government’s drive to lift Liberia onto a path of sustainable, long-term development”. 4/14/2010 | A four-day conference in the Liberian capital Monrovia on UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security has brought together participants from Liberia, Timor-Leste and Ireland to share lessons and strengthen the resolve of all to take action at every level as the 10th anniversary of the Resolution approaches this year. The UN Deputy Special Representative for Recovery and Governance, Moustapha Soumaré, addressed the gathering on: “1325 – Women, Peace-making and Peace-building from a UN perspective”. The conference in Monrovia, which is a cross-learning process, is organized by the Liberian Ministry of Gender and Development and the Conflict Resolution Unit of the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ireland. It is the third meeting after the first in Belfast, Northern Ireland and the second in Dili, Timor-Leste in 2009. <a href=DSRSG Moustapha Soumaré,s remarks at Conference" /> 3/24/2010 | A week-long Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) International Conference in the Liberian capital Monrovia brought together distinguished personalities in the West Africa Sub-region, including present and former Heads of State, to discuss the achievements, failures and lessons from two decades of peace processes in West Africa. Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf paid tribute to peacekeepers and others who had paid the ultimate price for peace while the UN Special Representative to Liberia, Ellen Margrethe Løj, commended the Government of Liberia and ECOWAS for organizing the conference and expressed the hope that West African people will be free of conflict and violence. 1/20/2010 | United Nations personnel in Liberia, including staff of the UN Mission (UNMIL) and UN agencies, held a solemn memorial service on 20 January for UN staff and other victims of the 12 January earthquake in Haiti. Special Representative Ellen Margrethe Løj laid a wreath to their memory and paid special tribute to Hédi Annabi, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, and his principal deputy, Luiz da Costa, who had served in UNMIL. Former UNMIL colleagues Fred Wooldridge, who was among the first to join UNMIL in 2003, and Jerome Yap, were also remembered. A minute of silence  was observed in memory of the victims. 1/14/2010 | The UN Special Representative Ellen Margrethe Løj interacts with locals of Lofa County during an assessment visit to the county which borders with Guinea and Sierra Leone. In addition to patrolling the border, UN peacekeepers continue to support the people of Liberia in working towards reducing poverty and resuscitating economic growth and development. The UN Envoy stressed the importance of peace and security to the development of Liberia, and urged Liberians to work with the UN Mission to protect and preserve the country’s peace. 1/13/2010 | UN Special Representative Ellen Margrethe Løj and Liberia’s Minister of Public Works Kofi Woods jointly launch a Bailey bridge on the border between Bong and Margibi counties in the town of Salala.  The original bridge along the Monrovia – Gbarnga highway connecting the two counties was destroyed in 1992 during the height of Liberia’s civil crisis. It was constructed by Bangladeshi UN peacekeepers in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works as part of the UN Mission’s continued support to Liberia’s rebuilding efforts. 6/8/2009 | A Security Council delegation led by US Ambassador to the UN Dr. Susan Rice visited Liberia in May to assess Liberia's progress towards peace and development and the performance of the UN Mission in Liberia with a view to determining the need for continued involvement of the international community to sustain peace and development in the country. 8/20/2008 | A new Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) report from UNMIL, covering the period January to June 2008, found only  five allegations of the misconduct, a significant fall from  the nine reported cases during July-December 2007. Releasing the report, the top UN Envoy in Liberia, Ellen Margrethe Løj, said that the mission will remain firm and resolute in ensuring that appropriate disciplinary measures are instituted for any proven SEA misconduct. 7/8/2008 | Liberia's Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Administration) Asatu Bah-Kenneth presented  recommendations from a strategic workshop held in Accra, Ghana,  for key members of the Liberia National Police to Deputy Justice Minister for Administration and Public Safety, Ceaineh Johnson. Addressing the closingsession of the workshop, Deputy UN Envoy in Liberia Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu urged LNP officers to be pace-setters in the new Liberia, making their organisation an example of professional policing that could help regain the full trust and confidence of the Liberian public.
