7/8/2008 | Liberia's Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Administration) Asatu Bah-Kenneth presented  recommendations from a strategic workshop held in Accra, Ghana,  for key members of the Liberia National Police to Deputy Justice Minister for Administration and Public Safety, Ceaineh Johnson. Addressing the closingsession of the workshop, Deputy UN Envoy in Liberia Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu urged LNP officers to be pace-setters in the new Liberia, making their organisation an example of professional policing that could help regain the full trust and confidence of the Liberian public. 4/22/2008 | Visiting Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon  reassured the people of Liberia his 4/15/2008 | Addressing the Security Council on 14 April, Special Representative of the Secretary-General Ellen Margrethe Løj said challenges related to security, rule of law and economic development must be addressed if Liberia is to solidify the progress made so far and UNMIL is to successfully draw down its presence in the country. “The hope and tranquillity we see today is tempered by a tenuous and fragile peace,” she said. As Liberia continues to rely heavily on UNMIL for security, 3/31/2008 | UN Deputy Envoy Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu launched a regional anti-rape campaign in Grand Gedeh County, highlighting the 2/4/2008 | The Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Ms. Ellen Løj, joined President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and World Bank Group President Robert Zoellick at the launch of three regional consultative meetings on 30 Janaury aimed at gathering the priority needs and aspirations of all Liberian towards national development. The UN Envoy pledged the continuing assistance and commitment of United Nations and its partners to the process of national recovery and development. 1/17/2008 | The new Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Coordinator of UN Operations in Liberia, Ms. Ellen Margrethe Løj, arrived in Liberia on Wednesday, 16 January, and has assumed duty.   “I am delighted to be in Liberia to start my work. A lot has been achieved since the war ended but we still have a lot to offer the Liberian people,” Ms. Løj said on arrival.  “I look forward to working effectively with everyone in the United Nations family and other partners to support the Government of President Johnson Sirleaf to transform the lives of all Liberians.” 1/4/2008 | Over 100 all female Liberian police officers have graduated from the Liberia Police Academy in Monrovia in an effort to achieve better gender representation in the Liberia National Police (LNP). The training was supported by the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) in collaboration with the Liberian government and other partners. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf called on the new officers to exhibit good character, credibility and confidence. UNMIL Officer-in-Charge, who is also the UNMIL Force Commander, Lt.-Gen. Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor, admonished the officers to  conduct themselves in line with the tenets of professionalism. 11/26/2007 | Outgoing Special Representative of the Secretary-General Alan Doss recently handed over the Circuit and Magistrate’s courts renovated by UNMIL through its Quick Impact Projects in southeastern Maryland County to further strengthen the rule of law in Liberia. “Without the rule of law, social and economic development cannot be accomplished,” the UN envoy reminded the people. So far, UNMIL has constructed and rehabilitated nine courthouses, while work is ongoing on five others. In addition, 24 police stations and 7 correctional facilities have also been renovated or constructed throughout Liberia. 11/8/2007 | Three Russian crew members of UT Air, contracted by UNMIL, who died a week ago in a helicopter crash near Ganta, Nimba County, began their final journey home on 8 November. Special Representative of the Secretary-General Alan Doss and other senior members of UNMIL laid  wreaths in memory of the fallen colleagues as the Last Post sounded. UNMIL and the Liberian government have expressed deep sympathies and condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. Investigations into the cause of the accident continue. 11/6/2007 | UNMIL recently handed over the newly renovated Snafu Dock School in Charlesville, Margibi County, to the local authorities. The Pakistani peacekeepers deployed in the area voluntarily undertook the renovation of the school that would benefit over 300 students. “Education is vital for the future of Liberia,” Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General Jordan Ryan said at the hand-over ceremony. He expressed sincere appreciation to the Pakistani contingent for the voluntary contribution and stressed the importance of giving equal chances for education to girls and boys. 10/26/2007 | Free medical care provided to over 700 women and children in the Monrovia suburb of New Kru Town by an all-female medical team drawn from UNMIL's Chinese, Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi and Ethiopian contingents formed part of the 62nd UN Day celebrations in Liberia. Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General Jordan Ryan delivered Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's message at the official ceremony, which was also attended by Vice President Joseph Boakai, senior government offiicials and members of the diplomatic corps. Peacekeepers and UN staff reached out to various schools across the country to explain the work of the UN. 10/8/2007 | Visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel has commended UN peacekeepers for their contribution to the restoration of peace and stability to Liberia. During her whistle-stop visit to Liberia on Sunday, 7 October, Chancellor Merkel was received by Special Representative of the Secretary-General Alan Doss at the National Police Academy in Monrovia where the UN Police, including German police officers, are training members of the Liberia National Police. UNMIL is assisting to restructure the police force and German peacekeepers are a part of this effort. 9/22/2007 | UNMIL celebrated the International Day of Peace on 21 September with sporting events and entertainment. The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General (DSRSG) for Recovery and Governance, Jordan Ryan, delivered the message of the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon. “The International Day of Peace is an occasion to take stock of our efforts to promote peace and well-being for all people everywhere,” the Secretary-General said. “As the guns fall silent, we should use this opportunity to ponder the price we all pay due to conflict.” 7/6/2007 | Joining Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General Jordan Ryan  to dedicate the Sean Devereux Community School in Perry Town, on the outskirts of capital Monrovia, was Sarah, Duchess of York, who was on a two-day visit to the country to promote education of disadvantaged children in Liberia. Constructed under the Quick Impact Project initiative of the UN Mission in Liberia, the school will accommodate over 300 children and will also provide skills training and learning programmes for teenage mothers, adults and school drop-outs.  The Duchess of York promised to support the construction of additional schools in the country. 6/26/2007 | Barcelona defender Lilian Thuram, on a one-day visit to Liberia to promote peace through sports, urged the country's youth to eschew violence, drugs and war. 5/29/2007 | Thousands of Liberians benefited from free medical camps conducted across the country by peacekeeping contingents deployed in Liberia as part of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers celebrated on 29 May. 

At UNMIL headquarters in Monrovia, Special Representative of the Secretary-General Alan Doss read out Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's message to mark the day before a wreath-laying ceremony in memory of the peacekeepers who lost their lives in the cause of peace. 5/2/2007 | Soon after the sanctions on Liberian diamonds were lifted on 27 April, Special Representative of Secretary-General Alan Doss handed over to the government of Liberia a regional diamond certification office constructed by UNMIL in Tubmanburg, 50 km west of the capital, Monrovia. During the ceremony, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf expressed her appreciation of international partners, including UNMIL and the U.S. embassy in Liberia, for their part in regularizing the country's diamond industry.<br/>
Describing the lifting of the diamond sanctions as a 4/27/2007 | A newly constructed Women's Training Centre, funded by UNMIL's Quick Impact Projects, was commissioned by Special Representative of the Secretary-General Alan Doss on 26 April at the OSIWA village, 12 km from Liberia's capital, Monrovia. The Centre, run by a local NGO, offers skills training, accelerated learning and adult literacy programmes for women, in addition to providing temporary shelter to abused women. “We have to ensure that that the women of Liberia have the training and skills to make the most of their abilities,” Doss said and described President Johnson Sirleaf as a role model for women, citing the difference she was making in the Liberian society. 3/28/2007 | A US$23,000 immigration office funded by UNMIL's Quick Impact Projects was handed over to the Liberian government on 25 March in Tubmanburg, capital of Bomi County.  Opening the office, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General Jordan Ryan said a well-equipped provincial immigration unit would make a significant contribution to reinforcing cross-border security.

“Liberia is no longer the heart of instability in the region; the country is making great strides in securing peace and stability; but there are regional challenges of potential threats of cross-border movements of small arms and light weapons, as well as rebels,” Mr. Ryan observed. 1/31/2007 | Marking a first in the history of UN peacekeeping, an all-female Formed Police Unit arrived in Liberia on 30 January to strengthen the rule of law and maintain peace in the war-torn country as part of the United Nations Mission in Liberia(UNMIL). The 103-strong operational unit from India will receive logisitics support from 22 men.<p>
“Our contingent has been carved out from a paramilitary force and as far as training is concerned, it is almost on the same line of what army recruits get,” said Commandant Seema Dhundia, pledging utmost professionalism from the officers in carrying out their duties.
